Metal vs. Rubber: How to Choose the Right Liner for Your Slurry Pump
A practical guide to picking the best wet-end material to cut your mining pump maintenance costs.
If you operate a gold mine, a coal preparation plant, or a dredging site, you already know the painful truth: slurry pump wear parts are one of your biggest ongoing expenses.
When your pump’s flow rate drops or a liner wears through, your entire production line stops. The question isn’t whether you will need to replace your wet-end parts—it’s how often.
To maximize your pump’s lifespan and keep your budget in check, the most critical decision you must make is choosing between high-chrome alloy and natural rubber liners.

- When to Go with High-Chrome Metal Liners (A05 / A49)
Metal is the undisputed king of heavy-duty, high-impact environments. Most standard horizontal slurry pumps (like the classic Warman® AH series) rely heavily on high-chromium white iron alloys, commonly known as A05 (Cr27) or A49 for corrosive duties.
You should choose high-chrome metal if:
- You are pumping large, sharp solids: If your slurry contains coarse rocks, gravel, or pebbles larger than 6–8 mm, rubber will get torn to pieces. Metal liners are hard enough (typically HRC 60+) to withstand the crushing impact of these large particles.
- You are running high-head systems: High-speed, high-head operations create massive kinetic energy. Metal handles the high velocity and physical impact far better than rubber.
- You need chemical resistance at high temperatures: Alloys like A49 are specially formulated to handle acidic slurries in high-temperature environments, where rubber would degrade rapidly.
- When to Switch to Natural Rubber Liners (R55)
Many maintenance managers overlook rubber, thinking “metal must be tougher.” This is a costly mistake. For the right application, premium natural rubber liners (equivalent to Warman® R55) will actually outlast metal by 2 to 3 times—and they cost significantly less.
Rubber doesn’t fight the abrasive particles; it absorbs their energy. When a small sand grain hits rubber, the rubber deforms slightly and bounces the particle off, suffering almost zero wear.
You should choose rubber liners if:
- Your solids are small and fine: If you are pumping fine sand, tailings, or flotation concentrates (particles smaller than 5 mm), rubber is your best friend.
- You are dealing with acids and chemicals: Natural rubber has excellent natural resistance to a wide range of corrosive chemicals and low-pH slurries, where standard steel would rust out in weeks.
- You want to save power and weight: Rubber liners are much lighter than metal, making them safer for your team to replace, and they run quieter, reducing noise pollution in your plant.
- The Golden “Rule of Thumb” for Maintenance Managers
